Themes for Westing Game:

Appearances: People aren't what they appear to be
*Wealth: Wealth can make people act funny and it is a cautionary tale
*Family: There are two types of families: One you are born into and one you choose
*Identity: The characters are establishing who they are and redefining themselves through the game
*Patriotism: This book was written during the Bicentennial and there are many immigrants represented in the story. Mr. Westing is big on American ideals throughout the story
Lies and Deceit: The characters will lie and use deceit to protect their identities
*Society and Class: The characters status often poses problems
*Language and communication: The reader has to do some close reading for clues and look at the language in the will

I believe this is it! The movie we will watch!
This week we finished The Westing Game. Next week, we will do one more activity. It will be an escape room type activity that involves reading and math. Following that, I will be in classrooms helping with testing. I won't see the fourth graders again until May 6th and 7th. May 7th being our last day together for Fourth Grade HA Language arts.

Fourth Grade Math

Math vocabulary:
addend, algorithm, denominator, difference, like-fractions, numerator, sum unlike denominator and unlike fractions

We are finishing our chapter on multiplying and dividing fractions. This may be our last week together as ILearn testing is the main concern. The children completed a Think Deeply where they compared two different strategies for dividing a fraction. One strategy used the invert and multiply while the other strategy used finding a common denominator and dividing across the numbers. The last thing they will do to complete this years math is a Chapter Check up where they will apply all fraction work thus far. I am looking forward to seeing if they retain the strategies we used all year.

Second Grade Language Arts
Themes in The Tale of Despereaux:
Light vs. Dark
Individuality/Differences
Taking Risks
Making the impossible...possible

On Monday, I spent time reading aloud to the boys. I loved reading aloud to them and so did they. We stopped along the way and discussed how the characters were feeling and made predictions about what would happen next. Reading aloud is such an intimate way to get to know your student's thinking and explore the book through visual and theatrical ways--you know I have a penchant for acting and cannot help but "act out the characters" while I read. Getting lost in stories happens often around here!
On Tuesday, the boys completed more handouts and I gave them time to read to themselves. They only have Chapters 42 and 43 to finish for next week.

*HA may be hit or miss over the next 2 weeks as Ilearn takes precedence and I will be proctoring in classrooms.

Breakdown for reading the book for the end of the year:

April 15 and 16 Finish Book 3 (checked/complete)
April 22 and 23: Read pages 175-221 (they just need to complete Chapters 42 and 43)
April 29 and 30: Read pages 223-End
May 6 and 7: Movie!

Second Grade Math

We are continuing our work with capacity. On Wednesday, the children got to get into the water and make measure their own capacities. They had fun using colored water to measure 1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/4. They figured out quickly, or maybe they already knew, that 2-1/2 cups make a whole and 4-1/4 cups make a whole. They learned pretty quickly that accurate pouring and measuring is important.

Third Grade Language Arts

Theme: Interactions

Themes in Black Beauty

*The ethical and humane treatment of horses/animals
*Coming of Age: Trials will test characters and these trials will lead to maturation
*Lifelong Friendships: Black Beauty spans birth through old age and two horses remain friends for the long haul.
*Rewards of Doing Good: When a person chooses to do something good, it will be rewarded

On Monday, we spent time in a Socratic seminar again. The girls discussed the Chapter: Oh, Humbug! Isabella was the leader this time and got the discussion going. I tried to stay out of the discussion, but I did want them to focus a bit more on details, so I did sneak in some questions at the literal level. The girls are really great at getting big themes and relating the story to their lives. We went back into the book and discussed particulars with this chapter and picked apart events in sequence. It's good every once in awhile to go and look at stories for their easy to discover details, too.

On Tuesday, the girls spent time reading. It's really important that the girls bring their books to HA because I only have two extras and its really hard to have silent reading time without enough books. Thank you!

Side note:
For us to finish Black Beauty by May 6, I am assigning an aggressive reading schedule. The girls will have time during HA to read so that will take some of the pressure off. They are determined to finish the book. I am right there with them. Thanks for helping me at home so they can finish this classic tale that will stay with them forever.

Reading for the remainder of the year:

April 15 and 16: Chapters 26-36 (check/completed)

April 22 and 23: Chapters 37-43 (check/completed)

April 29 and 30: Chapters: 43-47; Catch up

May 6 and 7: Movie!

Third Grade Math

Math vocabulary

Area
Perimeter
Rectangle
Square
Dimension

On Wednesday, the children worked independently to decide if they could how much room a Yeti actually needs. They worked together to explore the effect of doubling the length or width of the dimensions of rectangles on the total area. Eventually the will discover how many times greater the new area is than the original area. When they double the area the will see that the new square footage is actually four times greater than the original.
