Themes for Westing Game:

* Appearances: People aren't what they appear to be
*Wealth: Wealth can make people act funny and it is a cautionary tale
*Family: There are two types of families: One you are born into and one you choose
*Identity: The characters are establishing who they are and redefining themselves through the game
*Patriotism: This book was written during the Bicentennial and there are many immigrants represented in the story. Mr. Westing is big on American ideals throughout the story
* Lies and Deceit: The characters will lie and use deceit to protect their identities
*Society and Class: The characters status often poses problems
*Language and communication: The reader has to do some close reading for clues and look at the language in the will

The images below depict the pictures the author, Ellen Raskin, used from her "swipe file" as the inspiration for Angela Wexler and Turtle Wexler!

This week in Language Arts we are drawing character sketches and discussing the book in great detail. The wonderful thing about this book is that when you get to Chapter 24--you can't put it down!

One activity the children did this week, was to pick one character and show with text evidence how that character changed from the beginning of the book to the end.

The children are to read Chapters 25, 26 and 27 by Monday, April 15, 2019.

Fourth Grade Math

Math vocabulary:
addend, algorithm, denominator, difference, like-fractions, numerator, sum unlike denominator and unlike fractions

Grandma's cookbook had us measuring using fractions. The children are exploring recipes using measuring cups and beans. On Wednesday, the kids had to follow directions for tripling and dividing recipe ingredients. We worked together to multiply and divide fractions to figure out how much of an ingredient was needed.

Measuring with beans and multiplying and dividing fractions

On Thursday, we only had about 10-15 minutes together with one group. The kids were on their way to the Book Bowl!

Best of luck to these two cuties:

Second Grade Language Arts

Themes in The Tale of Despereaux:

Light vs. Dark
Individuality/Differences
Taking Risks
Making the impossible...possible

On Monday, we discussed the chapters that were assigned and the boys answered some comprehension questions in their journals. We are starting Book Three and a new character--Miggery Sow--will be introduced. She is riding into town with a soldier, utensils (banned by the King, no less!) and "ears that looked like nothing so much as pieces of cauliflower stuck to the side of her head."  We will come to see that she will be instrumental in helping Roscuro seek his revenge!

On Wednesday, we took a step away from Despereaux and jumped into the book, Westlandia, by Paul Fleischman. We are using this book to explore the topic of Bullying, how to be creative thinkers to solve a problem and to analyze character traits and motivations in literature.

I cannot even tell you how great this book is! The main character Wesley creates his own civilization with it's own language, sports, tools, etc. This was right up my alley and the boys! I challenged them to come up with their own civilization as a summer project.

Below is the Character Web we used after reading the book:

Second Grade Math

This week in Math we had a fun measuring scavenger hunt. Using different units of measurement (square centimeters, inches and feet), the kids went around the room and measured different items or tried to find different items that matched the measurements given.
Adam and Asher measuring a $20 bill!
John and Hershel measuring the top of a notebook using the area formula!
Elsie measuring my debit card in square centimeters--good thing there's no money in there! LOL

On Thursday, our Think Deeply asked the kids to look at an irregular shape and decide if Teller's estimate of the area is correct. The real point of the exercise is to make sure the kids can differentiate between estimating whether something is to be measured in square centimeters, inches or feet.

Third Grade Language Arts

Theme: Interactions

Themes in Black Beauty

*The ethical and humane treatment of horses/animals
*Coming of Age: Trials will test characters and these trials will lead to maturation
*Lifelong Friendships: Black Beauty spans birth through old age and two horses remain friends for the long haul.
*Rewards of Doing Good: When a person chooses to do something good, it will be rewarded

On Monday, the girls got to work on some fun worksheets related to Black Beauty. These worksheets help keep us on track and we are able to check in and see if everyone is on the same page. We will have other worksheets to go along with the book as well. Interactions have been our theme all year and this book lends itself to the interactions between Black Beauty and all of his owners.

The girls want to get back to Socratic Seminars, and we will! There are many chapters to get through. That brain work is still coming.

On Wednesday, we finished up our fun worksheets and we began a lesson on "Confusing Interactions"

We watched a video reading of the book, " Monkey Business"
We then explored confusing words and idioms like:

reign/rain/rein
main/mane
horse/hoarse

Homework: The girls need to read Chapters 26 , 27 and 28 by Monday, April 15, 2019.

Third Grade Math

Math vocabulary

Area
Perimeter
Rectangle
Square
Dimension

This week in math we are returning to the distributive property. I am returning to partitioning an area with the children and helping them write algorithms that can show how to solve for area. On Wednesday, we partitioned a 20 x 8 foot area. This was an easy problem to solve, but for the sake of demonstration we used an easy problem. With this problem, I was able to show the kids how to partition the area, and develop 3 equations, using the distributive property, to help solve the problem.

1. 8ft (10 ft. +10ft.)=(8ft. x 10ft) + (8ft x 10ft)=80ft +80ft=160sq feet

2. (10ft +10ft) x 8 ft=(10ft x8ft) +(10ft x8ft)=80ft +80ft=160 sq feet.

3. 8ft x (10ft. +10 ft)=8ft x 20 ft.=160 square feet

Writing equations to demonstrate thinking is an important skill and they got it! So proud!

On Thursday, we continued the Distributive Property learning with a Think Deeply. The task was to partition a Yeti pen that was 9 feet by 19 feet. After writing two equations, the kids got in groups of two and threes and played a game matching equations using the distributive property.
