Today is World Smile Day!
At Brummitt this month is bully prevention month. We are learning what bullying is, and how to prevent it. Friends don't let friends get bullied.
We did not have as many days of High Ability this week due to the fact that Mrs. Pierce's son was sick on Wednesday. So you will not see as much on our blog this week. Also having technical difficulties with getting the pictures to my email to put on the blog this morning. As soon as they pop up on my email I will update the blog with the pics!
This week in Language Arts:
First grade experimented with the Cipher wheel and how many different ways it can be used. They were excited to learn how to write their names in secret code! The kids struggled a bit when we changed the wheel to a "new code", but after a bit of practice, they were just like pros! We will continue to work on this lesson for one more week. They are excited to bring their wheels home to share the secret codes with their family and friends!

Second grade continued learning about
Edgar Allan Poe and his many works of poetry. We will start a new unit next week when we start reading our first novel. We will begin by making predictions about the book based on the cover. Please note: the students will have assigned readings that will be due each week to keep us moving through the novel at an appropriate rate. As a parent of three children, I know that life sometimes gets in the way of getting things done. However, please make sure your child is taking the time to complete the homework for high ability as they do for their regular classroom teacher. I give a week to get the assignments done, so please help them learn to be a responsible learner and get their homework turned in in a timely fashion.
Third grade missed a day due to early dismissal, but on Monday we were able to finish our reading of The Girl who loved Wild horses. We will continue to learn about the interactions we noticed in the book, as well as the character traits that were exhibited next week.
Fourth graders have been talking about the parts of a biography, and the upcoming bio project. Please continue to look for books for your project if you have not already started. We have also been reviewing our parts of speech and diagramming sentences. We will be reviewing our parts of speech and continuing with diagramming next week.

We were all excited to start our second unit in Math this week!
First graders started learning about squares and triangles together this week! We have been working in centers making shapes out of squares. Nest week we will learn that if we cut these shapes we can get new shapes!

Second grade continued their work on symmetry. They are doing a great job! They got to find all the lines of symmetry in square on Wednesday using a ruler.
Next week we will be working with light and dark paper squares and creating symmetrical and non symmetrical objects.

Third grade started a new unit and are continuing to learn about growing patterns. We are just getting started this week on introducing the concept.
Fourth graders are finally bringing to a close their first unit on fractions. They started their math message and started thinking deeply on Thursday.
Happy belated birthday to Lorelai and Happiest of birthdays to Ruby, Ethan, and Ava this week!
Congratulations to Tyler in 3rd grade and Riley in 2nd grade for knowing the answer to last week's brain squeeze!
This weeks teaser is:
If 3 peacocks lay 5 eggs in 8 days, how many peacocks will lay 29 eggs in 76 days?
Do something kind for others today and make someone smile!
Have a fabulous weekend!
Mrs. Pierce
