Here is what we have been up to in High Ability class this week!

 First grade- Wumbers
We did not have class on Monday due to the 2 hour delay, but on Tuesday, we jumped into our new book, WUMBERS by Amy Rosenthal. This book explores how you can use numbers to stand  in for letter sounds in words. For example, ornate (orn8), toucan(2can), and pretending (pre10ding).We read the book and figured out what the words meant as we went through it. The words increased in difficulty as the book continued. This was a fun and challenging activity for the kids.

First grade Math- angle sort and shape attributes
We reviewed our angles that we learned during our last class. Then we moved on to learning about attributes. I first divided the group by attiributes such as hair color, eye color, and clothing. I simply told them if they had the attribute or not as I divided them. Then we moved on to shapes, and the attributes that would describe them such as big, small. black, white,  all right angles, or  different angles. Next week we will be playing a game with shapes and attributes, and finally the week after we will be sorting our stuffed animals by their attributes. I am hoping that all the invitations to bring animals on the 21st and 22nd made it home. If you have any questions, please email or call. I think this will be a fun activity for the kids.

Congratulations to our Lady Bots! They placed 2nd out of 27 teams! Way to go!  These girls are amazing! So proud of their accomplishments!

Second Grade - Jeopardy
We continued reviewing our novel by playing Jeopardy. The questions got harder and harder. The Llamacorn team was victorious winning by 30 points. All students received a certificate of completion for their great teamwork and awesome attitudes. The winning team also got to choose from the prize box. Great job!
Next week we will be  starting our word clouds assignment that I have previously mentioned to you in an email. We are delayed in this activity due to my illness and CogAt testing as well as weather. More directions will be sent in an email later today. Please let me know of any questions. This assignment will be due on Tuesday, Feb 20th.

Second Grade Math- 3D shape creations
The students had a great time making 3D shapes with pipe cleaners and straws this week. The small groups were assigned to make 3 shapes each. We ended up with several cubes of different sizes, a triangular prism, a pyramid, and a rectangular prism. We will be making shape bubbles next week!

Third grade- Persuasive paragraphs

Students worked on writing a persuasive paragraph. They were to choose between two biographical texts about Jane Goodall. They have read the texts, and compared the texts in previous classes, so now they are to persuade someone to read the book that they liked the best.  They then used a rubric to evaluate their own writing, as well as their elbow partners writing.

Third grade Math- Think Deeply #2
We only met one time this week due to early dismissal day on Thursday.   Students had to choose a number lower than 20 and find the pattern of multiples on their hundreds chart. We had previously worked through one of these together, so they flew solo today and did a nice job!

Fourth grade- Monologues
We missed class on Monday due to hour delay. This means we will be moving our presentations back one week. Students will have  one more week to complete monologues and presentations. If we need to add another day we will .

Fourth grade Math- Math message and Think Deeply
This group has worked really hard on using the strategies of common numerators and common denominators to solve questions about putting fractions from smallest to largest. Next week we will have another Think Deeply and think and beyond activities before moving on to the next lesson.

In lieu of Math Trivia this week we will have Winter Olympic trivia. Here is the question for this week.

How many countries participating in the 2018 Winter Olympics? Also bring in a name of an athlete that you will be cheering on to win Gold !

Enjoy your extra day off!
