Phil says "Winter is not over yet.."

Phil says " Six more weeks of winter". Come on Phil, we are ready for spring!

Wow... what a couple of weeks... I am finally back at it this week, and it has been testing week as well. I know the kids have been  wondering where I am and why we have not had class regularly.

Kindergarten Testing:
This first week has been used to screen all kindergarten students at Brummitt using the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT).  It's actually a fun test for the kids taken on the iPads in the classroom..  Students who score a certain score on the screener will be taking the full CogAT test in the following weeks.  CogAT is one of the pathways to being identified as being high ability or having the potential to being high ability.  CogAT picks up on that "potential" HA student.  It shows how they think . . . that out of the box thinking . . . .ability to make connections that others of their age are unable to do.  These students often go undetected in the classroom.  They don't have to be your high readers and often times are not.  The other test used to identify an HA student is their end of the year NWEA scores (95th percentile or higher).  We will have this data at the end of the school year.  The third piece of potential data used is the teacher component using the Scales for Identifying Gifted Students (SIGS).  It's important to look at all three pieces of data as a whole before identifying students.  For those of you who may have older children in the program, our program is changing . .. for the better.   All you need to know is it's what's best for kids, so we know we are moving in the right direction.  More details to follow . .

Take a peek at our week!

First grade- I sadly did not get to see their smiling faces due to testing this week. We will be back on track next

Second grade -Jeopardy

We started playing our Jeopardy game over Edward Tulane. We will continue this next week crowning our Jeopardy champs on Tuesday! Will it be Team Llamacorn or Team Rockstar? The teams are neck and neck with the Llamacorns leading by only 5 points!!  The kids are having a great time playing and reviewing the novel. More information upcoming about the word clouds assignment next week!

Second grade Math-review 3D shapes

Math groups met on Thursday only due to testing.  They  played a kahoot game to review our 3D shapes. They had fun counting vertices and sides to see which shape it could be. We are making our 3D bubble shapes next week! I am hoping for some awesome results.

Third grade- Comparison of two texts

For once, third grade was the lucky ones to get to see me all week!!
In Language we looked at the book THE WATCHER a biography of Jane Goodall. We then compared it to a book we read a couple of weeks ago, Me...Jane.  We compared the two books using  a T chart.  A T chart is similar to a venn diagram that we have used before. The students compared the cover, the illustrations of both books as well as the content of both biographies. They then had to choose a biography that they thought gave more information.
We then reviewed the Hamburger model that we use for persuasive writing. The students filled out their hamburger organizers, and will write their persuasive paragraphs next week.

 Math- Think Deeply
We continued learning about hundreds charts and started our first  Think Deeply.  The students worked in small groups together. The next day we used out math messaging board to write the answers down as we had our class discussion. For this question they had to use their  hundreds charts and color in the multiples of 2 and 3...and then we had to name the numbers that were colored both colors.  We then had to think and discuss and figure out why they were the same color.  The students had a bit of a disagreement about the numbers that were both colors, so we walked through it.
The students figured out that the numbers were all even, and if they were both multiples of 2 and 3, they were also multiples of 6. They went back and checked the numbers on their charts to see if they were correct.    We will be completely another Think Deeply next week.

Fourth grade- monologues

They had one day to work on their monologues. We will complete them and start working on our presentations next week. They continue to amaze me with their awesome work!

Fourth grade- no class due to testing. We will catch up next week!

Math Trivia is back!! Here is the question for this week:
The Groundhog says there are 6 more weeks of winter. How many days and hours are in 6 weeks? Turn your answer in to Mrs. Pierce  to pick out of the prize box!

Have a great  weekend!!
