Time flirs when you are having fun!

Happy Friday! Time is flying by these last few weeks. We are working hard to get our lessons completed so we can have some end of the year fun!

First grade- Rebus Puzzles
The students learned how to decipher rebus puzzles this week. Rebus puzzles are made of pictures that make words. For example
Rainbow
These rebus puzzles are  similar to math problem because you can add or subtract letter sounds in a Rebus puzzle. The students did a great job figuring these puzzles out, We then read a book called The Fantastic Five and Dime store ( A Rebus Adventure) by  J.Patrick Lewis.
In this book there is a mysterious five and ten cent store that sells unique items. The store is filled with crazy activities such as a bunch of cats are playing catch and a tuba is tooting and scaring a plastic hen. The kids enjoyed solving the puzzle in the sentences, and liked all the crazy activities in the book.

Second grade- IMovie book trailers
We finished our sequencing activity from the novel, and we got to explore the neat things we can do with IMOVIE.  The students may work in pairs, small groups, or individually to make a book trailer for either novel that we have read this year.  Most students have chosen to use the novel The Indian in the Cupboard.
The end of novel project is due MONDAY... thank you to those who already brought them in ...we will be sharing them this week and  then I will  send them home.

Third grade- Black Beauty
We are continuing to read our novel, and we are making steady progress. Students got to examine some horseshoes that have been worn by one of Mrs. Beckwith's horses. They got to see how a horse's shoe is not much different from their own with use and wear and tear. It is interesting as we track the character traits and interactions between Black Beauty and his masters, and handlers. The students are picking up on how cruel some of the equipment that was used on the horses would have been.

Fourth grade- Westing game
We continue to gather clues and evidence for our novel this week. They continue to encounter information that may or may not be important to the conclusion of the book. Students have not yet realized the agent of change in the novel. In the novel it states that the heirs were paired perfectly. We will be discussing in our final week what the connections are between the pawns, as well as how the game was won.

First grade math- Think and beyond
Students worked in a small group to complete the think and beyond cards this week. They designed their own 4x6 puzzles with patterns for shapes, colors and sizes. They then traded in their group to compare puzzles. They also created their own tree diagram puzzle  with negations.  We will be reviewing skills next week before completing the post test.

Second grade math- Playground Equipment
Students got to create their own playground equipment to fit in their floor design they created in the last lesson using eight to fourteen blocks to create new playground equipment. They really liked this hands-on activity!

Third grade- Mental Math
This week we started our last math lesson for the year. Mental math is all about teaching the children the associative and commutative property of addition. In this lesson, students learn the following addition properties: the commutative property of addition, which states that a + b = b + a, the associative property of addition, which states that (a + b) + c = a + (b + c), Students gain the knowledge that the sum is the same whether the numbers are grouped the same or differently.  They played a card game with numbers and worked on adding the numbers in their head. For example (7+3) + 21=31.

Fourth graders- Think Deeply
Students completed the think deeply portion of the lesson. Students were to find 3 fractions that were equivalent to one yard. They also had to tell if it equaled more or less than 1 yard.  This is the last lesson that we will completing this year. Next week we will be reviewing material that we have learned throughout the year as we ready ourselves for the post test.

Only two weeks left of HA classes for the 17-18 school year.  The last day of class will be Thursday, May 10th.
Summer school starts Thursday, May 31st at Bailly Elementary.

Have a fabulous weekend!
