Time for some Fall Fun!

Happy Freaky Friday! It is the first day of Fall today!  Mother Nature is being a trickster with such hot weather this week! The leaves are starting to change, so we are getting there.

This week at Brummitt, we have been talking about being respectful. We have been busy bees in our room...

BEE smart, BEE kind, Bee respectful, and BEE yourself!

Language Arts

1st grade:
We worked on creating our Coat of Arms for our first lesson on Connections. We are excited to present to our class next week on Monday! The students did a great job designing and creating their shields!

2nd grade

This week we have been reading Edgar Allan Poe's Eldorado. We listened to the poem on the internet then we predicted what we thought the poem might be about in our writing journals. Then we used a Reading analyzer to help us figure out what the poem is all about. We use it to find key words that we do not know the meaning of, as well as feelings that are described, main idea o

This week we have been reading Edgar Allan Poe's Eldorado. We
f the poem and the structure of the poem. We will use reading analyzers as the year goes on, and while they are hard to do the first few times, they will get easier. There will be a homework assignment using the Reading Analyzer next week. It will go home Tuesday and be due on Monday, Oct 2nd.

3rd grade

We continued learning about Interactions. We learned the prefix Inter- means among others or between. We already knew that action means doing something.

We brainstormed in groups to see who could think of the most interactions. Both groups did a great job! On Tuesday, we started talking about interactions and how they can be purposeful or accidental, fleeting or long lasting. We then started organizing our thoughts on the Interaction Organizer.

4th grade:

This week was all about learning why our language changes. From words being borrowed from other languages; to new words being created when word elements are combined, the English language is amazing! They investigated root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
SPECIAL PROJECT ALERT:

We are gearing up to start our bio projects. Please have your student think of a person they would like to learn more about through this project. We will look in our library to get ideas of what references are available to us, as well as possible people to learn about. Please make a trip to your local library to see what is available. I know they have amazing resources. Please do not check out any books yet... Just window shop. More info to come next week.

WORD NERD ALERT

Calling all word nerds to try to solve this linguistic question:

What is the difference between a simile and a metaphor? This week's question comes from the 2nd grade group discussion this week. Good Luck! And remember, if you know the answer and tell me, you get to pick a prize out of the prize box!!

Math News

1st grade:
Continued learning about our new vocabulary words, and talked about the definition of a triangle. We learned that a vertex is that pointy part of a triangle or shape where the sides come together.
On our thankful Thursday, we learned to play a new game called Zani Lingo. It was lots of fun!

2nd grade
We worked on being good listeners for the question that Dru and Teller were asking us to figure out. We worked as a group using our talk moves. We answered the question successfully, and reviewed how to think like a mathematician. On Thursday, we learned how to THINK DEEPLY, and explain how we solved the question.

3rd grade

Boy did we use our brains this week! We talked about growing patterns, and how we can use patterns in our math to solve harder problems. Some caught right on to how to do it, and others took a bit longer. We practiced how to write and answer our Think deeply questions and talked about our Math Message for the week.

4th grade

We continued working on our Fraction strips this week. We got to label our strips on Thursday. Next week we will use our strips to help us with equivalent fractions. We are glad all of that folding is over for our friend with the broken arm. He was such a trooper!

This week's challenge is :

Which is the
name of the shape that has 12 sides?

CONGRATULATIONS to Tyler in 3rd grade for being the only one to answer last weeks brain squeeze! He got a prize for his correct answer!

Have a great weekend!
