Language Arts:
First Grade:
This week we
worked more on secret languages and connections. On Monday we completed a
worksheet with clues on how to change words to a new word just by changing one
letter. We also talked about connections like connecting one image to another
just by thinking about them and how they make us feel. On Tuesday we finished
up the worksheet and we created cool holiday trees. They got to use stickers and
color and draw. We talked about making connections with the holidays. Like when
we think of turkeys we think of thanksgiving and when we think of green
evergreen trees we think of Christmas. Next week we will work more on ciphers
and secret languages and how to crack the codes to find the messages. We will
also read the book The Disappearing Alphabet and talk about connections.
Second Grade:
This week we continued reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward
Tulane. We also completed a worksheet where we discussed parts of the
book and what the author might be trying to teach us about Edward and the other characters. Tuesday we worked more on Edward and sentence structure of several sentences from the book. We also discussed how Edward is changing into a totally different rabbit as we read further into the story. He is on a hero’s journey.
Third Grade:
This week we read the poem about the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The students were given no picture or information on the ship except for what
the poem tells them. We discussed how the poem makes us feel and the tone of the poem. The students then got to draw what the poem made them think and
feel. Then on Tuesday we watched a video about the ship and the wreck. We also listened
to the song. We had an open discussion on the poem and the ship. Students
realized how important legends are to literature.
Fourth Grade:
This week we worked more on our biographies. They got to
use the computers both days to gather information and pictures to use for their
timelines. Next week we will start creating the timelines. Make sure to ask
your children about who they have decided to complete their project on. They
students will also have to figure out a way to present the information to us.
They can also dress up like their person. They can be as creative as they want.
They will work on the timeline in class and can complete parts at home if
needed. The students will research it
online and through books, they will learn about credible sources, they will
learn to complete a timeline, and they will learn to create a prezi.(check out
what a prezi is at this website: https://prezi.com/).

They also had to figure out if the answers were even or odd amounts. They used their whiteboard to help them solve each problem.
On Thursday we played Pet Shop Math where the students had to solve problems about buying pets at a pet shop. They got to choose different cool and fun pets and add up their cost and pay for them.
They loved to see all the unusual pets out there and what they could buy. Next week we will continue to have fun in the Pet Shop.
