 It's pre-assessment Time!

At the beginning of the school year, we assess the students in Language Arts and/or Mathematics. The tests are tailored to the material the kids will learn this school year. Some students may only get 1 or 2 questions correct and that is perfectly fine.  Even though we were playing fun "getting to know you" activities last week, we also talked about the assessment tests. I laid out expectations for the kids and our morning quotes revolved around why it is okay if you do not know how to answer a problem - yet. We also talked about why making a mistake can be a great way to learn. I assured them that putting a question mark instead of an answer was absolutely alright! At the end of the year, I believe the kids will be amazed when they take the same assessment and are able to answer most if not all the questions!

When the assessments were complete, the kids were able to color or try out an extreme dot to dot.  My second graders even had the choice to play with blocks!
