Happy Summer!

High Anility Summer School- If you have registered your child for the program, they are all set. Further information will be sent home at the end of the year.  Any  questions, email me or call Mrs. Henning at Brummitt.

Last day of school is Friday, May 25th.

We had a lot of fun this last week of High Ability

First grade- Hieroglyphs
We have been learning a bit about the Egyptian culture as well as how they communicated. Students learned about the Rosetta Stone that contained three types of writing. The top contained hieroglyphics, the middle contained a type of Egyptian writing called Demotic, and the bottom portion was in ancient Greek which was easily translatable. We discussed how translating the message e was much like "breaking a code" and how we have learned to use ciphers to decode messages about language all year. Now they got to study the hieroglyphs and see which symbols represented the letters in their names. The students then created their own names in hieroglyphics and made a connection to one of the hieroglyphs in their names

Second grade- Imovies
The kids continued to create their own movie trailers for one of the novels we read this year. This was a fun end of year activity for them and they shared them on Tuesday with the class. All of the kids did a rock star job on their movie trailers and even showed them to their classrooms when they returned.

Third grade- Black Beauty
We finished the year off with a kahoot game about Black
beauty to review the novel and the interactions that occurred. Students learned a lot about interactions with animals and a bit about activism this year. They all came out of class with a great respect for treating everyone with kindness.

Fourth grade- did not meet due to track meet and classroom activities.

Math classes-

First grade- games
We finished the year by reviewing our math facts playing Jenga Math! Every answer they got correct they got to remove a block.  We also reviewed shapes and polygons by playing a few rounds of Zani Lingo.

Second grade- Marshmallow Catapults
This week students worked in small groups to design their own marshmallow catapults. They designed and created them on Wednesday and on Thursday we had a competition to see who could fling a marshmallow the furthest. They then measured with our rulers to see how far they flew.

Third and Fourth graders- floating boats

Students worked together in small groups to design and create a boat that would be able to float with the weight of 50 pennies on it. Students chose the materials they would use last week, and I brought in other materials that I thought might be helpful. The students did a great job designing their boats.

Here are more pics from our fun week!

As the year comes to a close, I would like to thank you all for a  great year. You have a great bunch of kids and I was happy to be a part of their year.

Have a great summer!
