Welcome March!

This week at Brummitt we had a lot happening with I-Step exams, CogAT testing, book fair starting, and the festival of learning. Some of the classes were changed or cancelled because of the testing that needed to be completed. Thursday night was the Festival of Learning.
It was great to see all the students here at Brummitt that night. They all did such a great job on their projects. I really enjoyed seeing all the creative and hard work. Each student really put a lot of time and effort into their projects. Make sure to look through the blog this week for all the awesome pictures I took during the festival.
This week it was national breakfast week and lots of students were enjoying breakfast here at school each day.  We are still working on our Life Skills and this week we are working on kindness, caring, and cooperationWe want the students to care about each other and be there to help when they need it.
They are also doing really well at making sure to help each other and cooperate when they are working in teams. It is great to watch them learn from each other and do well working together toward a common goal. Next week I will continue with CogAT testing the second grade classes and will not be able to have all the regular classes.

Language Arts:

First Grade:
This week was alittle different since I had to setup testing and we only got to complete part of our lesson, but the students did get to have some fun. On Monday they got to play story cubes and tell each other interesting stories using the story dice. We also started to talk about their homework they completed over the weekend. Each student got to interview an adult about what a dime store was.
They loved getting to talk and interview someone. On Tuesday we looked at the pictures they drew showing what they liked most about the idea of a dime store. Let’s just say the penny candy aisle was a huge hit with them. They got to talk about the whole experience and everything they learned. I think it was great to have them talk about their families and who they interviewed. Next week we will start on a very cool lesson about picture puzzles and deciphering what they mean. I look forward to seeing what they find in each puzzle.

Second Grade:

This week we didn’t get to meet since we were testing all the second grade classes for the CogAT. Next week continue to read The Tale of Despereaux.  We will keep comparing The Miraculous Journey of Edward to The Tale of Despereaux.

We will also keep making connections between the books. We will discuss how important connections are and how these books help you make them.

Third Grade:
This week we didn’t get to meet because of CogAT testing. Next week we will continue working on Alice in Wonderland. We will continue to read and answer journal questions. We will also have a class discussion on the book.

Fourth Grade:

This week the students got to finish up work on their biography projects. They had the two days to finish all the last minute prep they needed. Some students that were already complete got to read and have some fun on the computers. Next week we will start the monologues. Please talk to your children about their person and see if they need any last minute help with their monologue since this is something very new for them.

The students will also have to figure out a way to present the information to us. They can also dress up like their person. They can be as creative as they want. Here is the information on what they will create:
People Who Made a Difference Instructions
Step Six: Consider change in the person’s life and how he/she made a difference. Write a monologue including events, changes, and differences made in regard to his/her life.  (Everyone should be done with this part.)

Step Seven: Create a Power Point or Prezi that includes the person’s name, a photo, years lived, and contributions. (Everyone should be done with this part.)
Step Eight: Memorize your monologue and dress as your character. You are now ready for the People Who Made a Difference presentation. (Everyone should be done with this part, but I have a few that might need help finishing last minute prep)
  Monologue Criteria
o Monologue describes events in the person’s life with detail and clarity.
o Monologue includes insight to changes in the person’s life.
o Monologue explores how the person made a difference.
o Speaker confidently presents monologue using good eye contact, posture, and voice.
o Speaker engages audience with appropriate words, facial expressions, and gestures.
o The presentation is supported with appropriate costume and props.

Math:

First Grade:

This week with all the testing going on we decided to have some fun with the electronic whiteboard, we played fun math games and memory. We used a great learning website called Gynzy. We had fun challenging each other with the memory game. Next week we will work on measurement with some fun activities.

Second Grade:

This week with the CogAT testing going on we only got to meet on Wednesday. I decided the students needed to relax and have some fun. We used a great learning website called Gynzy. They had a blast challenging each other with the memory game to see who could remember more. Next week we will have fun with Minecraft math facts and go back and work with more patterns.

Third Grade:

This week we continued with Sweet Multiplication. There were a few more tests passed. It looks like I will have to get more ice cream bars soon because I have two students left to pass their 12’s and the class will be complete. I promised another ice cream party and I will deliver. I bet in the next week or two they will be complete. This week we only got to meet on Wednesday because I had CogAT testing to complete with the second grade.
The students wanted to have some fun since they have been testing too this week. They wanted to play the memory game again on the computer white board. There were two teams and they did a fantastic job with team work to figure out where the pictures were. It was amazing to watch them. Next week we will have more fun with math games using our math facts skills.

Fourth Grade:

This week we continued to work on coding. Coding gives the students a chance to work on problem solving and logic to figure out each section and lesson. It is like solving a puzzle to write the code correctly using the least amount of script. The students love the challenge each level and lesson give them.

I see them using all their skills to figure how to work out each challenge to have the characters complete the tasks needed in that level. They have to make the characters draw certain objects and complete certain tasks. They are really thinking through each move they make to write the script. They all worked both days on their lessons.

I have some students that have already completed the first course so I created the next grade level course and some students are rocking through that one too. I think this gives students the chance to help each other while still working independently at their own pace. They love talking to each other as they work to see if anyone needs help and where everyone is at. Next week we will keep working on coding and all the challenges it has to offer.
