This week at Brummitt there was a lot going on with the CogAT testing, Science VIP night, and the Second Grade Musical.
It was so awesome to get to see all the second graders perform together singing and acting. The musical combined several fables and tales.
The students did an excellent job with their parts, playing their instruments, and singing. I think it was such a great show and they worked so hard. The music teacher taught them so much.
We are still working on our Life Skills and this week we are working on responsibility. I want the students to learn how important it is to take responsibility for their own success.
The students need to learn that they are responsible for their own education and learning. I hope that I can help them to want to be accountable.
Language Arts:
First Grade:
This week the students got to work more on the lesson and finish up talking about dime stores. We will have a fun activity next week with the poem and dime stores. On Monday the students had to draw a picture of a friend and make a connection with that friend. They got to write about how they are connected.
They also got to explain what kind of connection it is and if they think that the connection will change over time. They loved this activity. They were so excited to write about someone and explain how they are connected. On Tuesday they completed the next cipher.
This was a 3 x 13 array cipher. They discussed it and finally figured it all out. They loved writing in the cubes and solving the mystery of what it said: Pictures can stand for sounds in words.
Since I still have testing I am completing for CogAT, they got to come down for the last part of class to the computer lab to have some fun. They got to find a cool word game to play. It was nice to take a break and have some fun with words. Next week we will continue with this lesson which will include REBUS puzzles. I think they will love trying to figure out words with the pictures.
Second Grade:
This week we only got to meet on Monday because of second grade CogAT testing we are still completing. We continued to read The Tale of Despereaux. We discussed the story and how the characters are introduced and how they all interweave in the storyline. Next week we will continue to read The Tale of Despereaux.
We will keep comparing The Miraculous Journey of Edward to The Tale of Despereaux. We will also keep making connections between the books. We will discuss how important connections are and how these books help you make them.
Third Grade:
On Monday we continued reading Alice in Wonderland. The students also answered another question in their writing journals. They wrote about how the author is keeping the readers interested in the story thus far.
Tuesday we didn’t get to meet because of CogAT testing. Next week we will continue working on Alice in Wonderland. We will continue to read and answer journal questions. We will also have a fun activity or two.

Fourth Grade:
This week the students started giving their presentations. They had so much fun talking to each other about their person. Monday some of the students gave their Prezi Presentations which gave the other students a look at the people we would be learning about through the monologues.
We learned about King Tut, Martin Luther King Jr., Helen Keller, Stephen Hawking, Nickola Tesla, and Tomas Edison. It was so cool to see the students present the information they learned to the class.
I think they have learned so much about researching someone and finding the important parts of their lives that helped shape them into the powerful people they became. Next week we will continue to watch the Prezi Presentations and hear more monologues.
People Who Made a Difference Instructions
Step Eight: Memorize your monologue and dress as your character. You are now ready for the People Who Made a Difference presentation. (Everyone should be done with this part, but I have a few that might need help finishing last minute prep)
Monologue Criteria
o Monologue describes events in the person’s life with detail and clarity.
o Monologue includes insight to changes in the person’s life.
o Monologue explores how the person made a difference.
o Speaker confidently presents monologue using good eye contact, posture, and voice.
o Speaker engages audience with appropriate words, facial expressions, and gestures.
o The presentation is supported with appropriate costume and props.
Math:
First Grade:
This week with the CogAT testing still going on we decided to have some more fun with computer math games. We played several math games on the I-Pad and on the computer. One helped us learn more about time and setting the clock to the correct time. We played one that worked with measurement and knowing which items were longer or shorter. Next week we will work on measurement with some fun activities.
Second Grade:
This week with the CogAT testing going on we only got to meet on Wednesday. We decided we needed to have more fun with math games. We decided to use the electronic whiteboard to play a cool multiplication game with the math facts. Student got to solve problems and earn fish for the fish tank. They did great with their math facts. I was so proud that they knew so many multiplication math facts. They only missed a few. They worked together as a team to solve each problem that they needed help with.
Next week we will have fun with Minecraft math facts and go back and work more with patterns.
Third Grade:
This week we continued with Sweet Multiplication. We are almost there we only have the 12’s left to pass. Next week I think they might be done with them all. We only got to meet on Wednesday this week because of the Second Grade Musical the school attended on Thursday.
I wanted us to have some fun while practicing the multiplication math facts. The students got to play a math car racing and a space math game on the computer whiteboard. They had so much fun helping each other and watching each other play.
I think it was cool to watch how much they have learned so far this year in Math. Next week we will have more fun with math games using our math skills.
Fourth Grade:
This week we continued to work on coding. We have had some students already completed with two of the long courses and starting on the next one. Coding gives the students a chance to work on problem solving and logic to figure out each section and lesson. It is like solving a puzzle to write the code correctly using the least amount of script. The students love the challenge each level and lesson give them. I see them using all their skills to figure how to work out each challenge to have the characters complete the tasks needed in that level. They have to make the characters draw certain objects and complete certain tasks. They are really thinking through each move they make to write the script.
They all worked both days on their lessons. I have some students that have already completed the first course so I created the next grade level course and some students are rocking through that one too. I think this gives students the chance to help each other while still working independently at their own pace.
They love talking to each other as they work to see if anyone needs help and where everyone is at. Next week we will keep working on coding and all the challenges it has to offer.
Have a Great Weekend!!
