Is Spring Here?

Today is the first day of Spring, but it doesn’t really feel like it yet. I think we had one great day this week, but I am hoping for more during spring break. This week at Brummitt we had some great things going on. The fourth grade classes had their spelling bees. We had some students do really well. Here are a few pictures of some of the winners.

It was the first week back to normal after testing. All classes got to meet and we had so much fun this week.  We are still working on our Life Skills
and this week we are working on character, integrity, and honor.
I want the students to learn how important it is to show character and integrity each day. We want the students to learn that their character defines them as they grow and become adults.  We want them to know to always be great people no matter if anyone is watching or not. I see them do this each day with one another other. They always are there for each other no matter what.

Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character.

When you are content to be simply yourself and don’t compare or compete, everybody will respect you.
-Lao-Tzu

If there is beauty in character, there will be harmony in the home. If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation. If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world.

It takes less time to do a thing right, than it does to explain why you did it wrong.
-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.

The time is always right to do what is right.

You can stand tall without standing on someone.  You can be a victor without having victims.

Language Arts:

First Grade:

This week the students got to work on more rebus puzzles. The student got to look at the puzzles and figure out the words. We also talked more about dime stores and life at that time. After spring break we will continue with the lesson and read a very cool and interesting book.

Second Grade:

This week we continued to read The Tale of Despereaux.  We discussed the story and how the characters relate to the light and dark in their worlds. We discussed Princess Pea and how she is the light while others in the story like the rats and Mig are dark.  After spring break we will continue to read The Tale of Despereaux and make some more comparisons to our last book The Journey of Edward. We will look for more connections and how these books help you make your own connection in life and to the world around us.

Third Grade:

This week we continued reading Alice in Wonderland.  The students are really excited about all the characters and how they are interacting. We discussed what we like so far and we discussed how strange some parts were. We completed the Alice Maze and started the Alice Word Search. After spring break we will continue working on Alice in Wonderland. We will continue to read and complete the word search.

Fourth Grade:

This week the students continued giving their presentations. Every student got to complete their monologues. I think they all did a good job. Some were very nervous which I can understand standing in front of the class, but they worked through it and did an excellent job. We learned about our current President Obama, a past president Theodore Roosevelt, Dr. Seuss, Walt Disney, and Stephen Hawking.

A few students didn’t get to show their Prezi’s but we can see them after Spring Break. I am very proud of all their hard work. After spring break we will start our mystery novel The Case of the Case of Mistaken Identity: The Brixton Brothers. I am really excited to start the book and all the cool activities we have planned.

Math:

First Grade:

This week we worked on temperature. We played a fun matching game with temperature finding correct
answers in Celsius and Fahrenheit. We also played a fun math game where you answer math questions and pile up your junk in the junkyard and whoever gets the highest pile wins. After Spring break we will work more on measurement.

Second Grade:

This week we worked on math multiplication math facts with Minecraft. They answered the facts and colored them to match the key. With the CogAT testing going on we only got to meet on Wednesday. We decided we needed to have more fun with math games. We decided to use the electronic whiteboard to play a cool multiplication game with the math facts.
Student got to solve problems and earn fish for the fish tank. They did great with their math facts. I was so proud that they knew so many multiplication math facts. They only missed a few. They worked together as a team to solve each problem that they needed help with. Next week we will have fun with Minecraft math facts and go back and work more with patterns.

Third Grade:
This week we started work on decimals. Students got a sheet to help them figure out the place values. And then they got to play a matching game where they matched the fractions to the decimals. The girls finished first and took home the win. On Thursday we got the laptops and played the racing game.

Students competed in car races answering math multiplication facts. The faster they answered the questions correct the faster their car went. Everyone did awesome and had so much fun competing. After spring break we will continue with decimals and bring back the math team and the comics.

Fourth Grade:

This week we continued to work on coding. We have had some students already completed with two of the long courses and starting on the next one. Coding gives the students a chance to work on problem solving and logic to figure out each section and lesson. It is like solving a puzzle to write the code correctly using the least amount of script.
The students love the challenge each level and lesson give them. I see them using all their skills to figure how to work out each challenge to have the characters complete the tasks needed in that level. They have to make the characters draw certain objects and complete certain tasks.
They are really thinking through each move they make to write the script. They all worked both days on their lessons. I have some students that have already completed the first course so I created the next grade level course and some students are rocking through that one too. This gives students the chance to help each other while still working independently at their own pace.

They love talking to each other as they work to see if anyone needs help and where everyone is at. After spring break we will finish working on coding and all the challenges it has to offer.

One last great thing. Here is some of the work of one of our students for the reading bowl. He worked really hard. Very very cool stuff.

Have a Great Spring Break!!
