The Month of Thanks!

This week we continued to celebrate the month of giving here at Brummit. The school is collecting non-perishable foods to donate. Next week we will discuss what we are thankful for and how we help others everyday, not just during the holiday season. I will also have the students read a quote about being thankful and write about how it makes them feel. Here are a few famous quotes about giving:

“It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.”
Mother Teresa

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
Winston S. Churchill

“You give but little when you give of your possessions.
It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.”
Khalil Gibran, The Prophet

“A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.”
Steve Maraboli, Life, the Truth, and Being Free

Language Arts:

First Grade:

This week we continued working on our writing with finishing up the persuasive writing paragraph and then we continued working on Pig Latin. On Monday we finished the paragraph on our opinion on whether first graders should learn Pig Latin.

We also learn the Hamburger Model song. Once the students sang the song and learned it we decided to have fun changing the lyrics into Pig Latin. It wasn’t as easy as they thought it would be. It took us the whole class on Tuesday, but we had so much fun translating it. Here are the lyrics:
E-way an-cay rite-way o-tay ersuade-say you-way
Ersuade-say you-way
Ersuade-say you-way
E-way an-cay rite-way o-tay ersuade-say you-way

Next week we will continue with connections. Students will have to make connections between words and figure out what the new word is with the clues provided. Then we will have some Thanksgiving Fun.

Second Grade:

This week we worked on the parts of speech. I wanted to make sure we could identify each word in a sentence and know what part of speech it belongs to. So I ended the class by playing the school house rock videos reminding him of the different parts. Here are a few of the links we watched:

On Tuesday we continued working on the parts of speech and connected it to our book The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by completed a worksheet with sentences from chapter four and dissecting them into what parts of speech they are.

It was fun to take parts of the book and see it in a different way. Next week we will write in our reader’s journal about Edward and being thankful. We will also have some fun Thanksgiving Activities.

Third Grade:

This week we worked on parts of speech, grammar, sentence structure, and tied it into Tall Tales. We took one of the tales and dissected each sentence to find the nouns and pronouns and highlight them each in different colors. The students were having some trouble so I decided to have them watch the school house rock videos to remind them about pronouns and nouns. Here are the links:
On Tuesday the students wrote in their reader’s journals about genres. They wrote which ones they prefer and why. We also discussed the differences between each. We also discussed fairy tales. Next week the students will write about being thankful and we will have some fun Thanksgiving Activities.

Fourth Grade:

This week we started our biography projects. The students will be working on an individual project about a person who made a difference in the world.

The students will research it online and through books, they will learn about credible sources, they will learn to complete a timeline, and they will learn to create a prezi.(check out what a prezi is at this website: https://prezi.com/). Both days this week they used the laptops to research possible people and decided who they wanted to present. Then they started their research online.

Please feel free to help your children in their research and creating information for their timelines. They will have to come up with 10 important dates from the person’s life and explain their importance to the class through their timeline. Next week we will have the laptops for the students to use to complete more research and we will write about what we are thankful for this year. We might even have time for a fun Thanksgiving activity.

Math:
First Grade:

This week we worked on writing a story math problem. We used an activity that gives you choices for settings, numbers, and operation. Then we drew the problem based on our cards we chose.
On Thursday we used the computer to write the story problem out. We also played a fun game where you used dice to roll out the math problems and then completed the worksheet. Next week we will complete fun Thanksgiving math activities.

Second Grade:

This week we worked more with money and solving money problems. We started with the whiteboard and the students got to figure out how much money they had. Then we decided to play a fun game who has… I have.
It is usually played with a whole class but we were up to the challenge to see if we could do it. We took all the cards and the guys figured out how much they had on each card then we went through and found each one. It was so challenging and fun we did it on Thursday too. They also worked on the board again solving money problems. Next week we will complete awesome Thanksgiving money activities.

Third Grade:

On Wednesday we completed the next tests in Sweet Multiplication. We had some great results. We now have two students on 11’s, one on 10’s, one on 8’s and three on 6’s. The students also started a fractions game where they worked in pairs to figure out if problem could be added or reduced. Then they had to place it into one of the categories: ¼, ½, ¾, or more than one. This took the rest of class Wednesday and all of class on Thursday. I think they had fun, but it was really challenging. Next week we will have some Thanksgiving fun with fractions.

Fourth Grade:

On Wednesday, we worked more on logic problems. The students had to figure out the following logic puzzle:
Frozen Cabbage Band - a logic problem
by Mark Stratton

Five friends pooled their resources one day and pieced a CD together from songs they had written. They called their band Frozen Cabbage and ended up playing a number of live gigs at local events. Determine the full name of each band member, the instrument (or mixing console) each played, the brand of equipment each used, plus each member's favorite magazine.

  • Steve wasn't the sound engineer. One of the women enjoyed EQ magazine.
  • Angie and Steve didn't like Recording magazine. The bass player used Ibanez equipment.

  • Mr. Magnus didn't use Mackie equipment. Mark's last name wasn't Hydal and he didn't play keyboard.
  • The sound engineer, whose last name wasn't Engel, enjoyed reading Mix magazine. The person who used Yamaha drums wasn't Robert, but their last name is Hydal

  • The five band members (in no particular order) were: Mark Scott, the female bass player, the person who read Musician, the one who used Peavey equipment, and Robert.

  • Shelley's last name was not Hydal or McArthur and she didn't use Roland equipment. Mackie only developed equipment for live sound and recording NOT musical instruments.
  • Steve McArthur was the guitarist.

The students used a chart to help them figure out the order.

On Thursday some students were already finished and moved on to two different fall and thanksgiving logic puzzles while others continued their work on the first puzzle. I am making sure to let the students work together and at their own pace. Next week we have more on logic puzzles and some fun Thanksgiving activity.

Have an Excellent Weekend and Stay Dry!
