This month is all about being thankful and learning to help others. This month we will have the students write about their feeling on giving and being thankful. Here are some quotes we will be using as reference in this month of giving:
This week we also honored all the people who have served in the U.S. armed forces.
Language Arts:
First Grade:
This week we worked more on Pig Latin by taking our connection sheets and writing those connections in Pig Latin to see if anyone in class could figure them out. They had a blast trying to figure each other’s out. We also started a discussion on the term opinion and how everyone can have different ones.
On Tuesday we continued to talk about opinions and I introduced persuasive writing to the students. We talked about how they can collect their thoughts before writing a paragraph by using the hamburger model. This is a brand new concept so we will review a lot throughout the year to help them to become better writers. Next week we will continue to work on our writing and deciphering clues.
Second Grade:
On Monday we discussed the book The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. We read a selection and then discussed how Edward is changing through the book and growing into someone who cares and loves others.
We also made predictions on what we think will happen next. On Tuesday we read another chapter and wrote in the reader’s journal about Edward and how he has expanded his feelings and thoughts of others. Edward is becoming a complex character as he continues his journey. He began as a one dimensional character and now he has so much more depth to him. He is learning to care about others and their thoughts and feelings.
We also made some predictions of what we think might happen in the next few chapters as he continues his travels. Next week we continue to work on The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. We will also work on sentence structure and writing in the reader’s journal.
Third Grade:
This week we continued our work on Tall Tales by having each student read a tall tale, complete a retelling map and present it to the class. The students had fun talking about their tale and sharing what happened with the class. This gave the students a chance to talk about and discuss what makes a story a tall tale.
On Tuesday we reviewed the parts of speech and read the story “Billy Beg and his Bull.” We discussed what type of story it was and we decided it was a fairy tale. We went over why it is a fairy tale. We also created a Venn Diagram to figure out what makes a tall tale and fairy tale different and the same. Next week we will work more on genres and start working on grammar and sentence structure.
Fourth Grade:
On Monday the students worked on their biography summaries. They also completed a worksheet on sentence structure. I have found that we will need to continue to work on sentence structure to help them become better writers.
On Tuesday I gave the students a book mark to help them with the parts of speech that they can refer to when writing. The students were ready to get up and talk about their biography summaries. They were nervous but they all did a great job getting in front of the class to talk about their biography.
Next week we will finish up the last few students needing to speak about their summaries then we will start our research on people who have made a difference. The students will get to use the laptops to research a person who has made a difference in the world now or throughout history. We will spend the week researching and the students will complete a timeline on that person. The students will also learn about what is a credible source on the internet.
Math:
First Grade:
On Wednesday we finished up our cool poster we created to solve the problem from One Duck Stuck by Phyllis Root.We started to work on some word problems that were placed all over the classroom. We searched for each problem then used our sheet to solve it.
On Thursday we completed the problem of the day, worked on Math facts, and tried a few more word problems.
Second Grade:
On Wednesday we completed a worksheet “How much is your name worth?”. The students figured out how much their first and last names are worth in money and they completed it up on the board so they could check each other’s work. It was so much fun to see what each name was worth that we decided to try and figure out what other words are worth.
Here is the additional list we worked on: Subtraction, High Ability, Addition, and my last name. They like working on the whiteboard up front because it makes them feel like they are teaching.
On Thursday we also worked on the whiteboard to figure out what each group of money is worth.
I gave them each pictures of coins and bills and they had to figure how much money they each had. It was a blast. Next week we will work more with money and we will work on math facts.
Third Grade:
On Wednesday we completed the next tests in Sweet Multiplication. We had some great results. We now have two students on 8’s, one on 7’s, one on 6’s and one on 5’s. They students also practiced their math facts by playing card war.
On Thursday we started fractions by watching a few videos on Brainpopjr.com. We also watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HbohlgNl-Y
This gave the students an introduction to fractions and a chance to see it visually. We will continue to work on fractions and the sweet multiplication next week.
Fourth Grade:
On Wednesday, we started with the Problem of the Day then we moved on to logic. The students had to figure out the following logic puzzle:
Feeding Time ~ a logic problem
by Shelly Hazard
by Shelly Hazard
Zookeeper George was in charge of feeding all of the animals in the morning. He had a regular schedule that he followed every day. Can you figure it out from the clues?
- The giraffes were fed before the zebras but after the monkeys.
- The bears were fed 15 minutes after the monkeys.
- The lions were fed after the zebras.
The students used a chart to help them figure out the order.
This one was more difficult so they did get to work together to trying to figure it out.
Next week we will continue to work on logic puzzles and see if we can really challenge the students.
Have an Excellent Weekend!
Mrs. Lutterman
