International Day of the Girl

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL

On October 11, the International Day of the Girl Child seeks to bring awareness and solutions to the unique challenges that girls around the world face every day.
From the moment a child is born, she can grow up to be a scientist, author, business leader, mother, teacher or anything she may choose to be. Providing her with the healthy options, education, and resources to make her own choices means removing some of the obstacles she faces.
Depending on where she lives, a young girl’s challenges will vary and how we approach addressing those issues will change. During International Day of the Girl Child, join the global call to action. Create real solutions; listen to the aspirations of young women; mentor someone who will someday overcome the challenges she faces.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Join events around the world designed to improve the lives of girls in the most impoverished nations. Become a mentor. Donate supplies to schools. Be inspired by the spirit and drive of each generation of girls. Empower them by speaking about women leaders from the past and present. Whether she was a teacher or an author, a political leader or an activist, share the stories of those who have made changes for the better in the world. Be a part of the difference that makes lives better for aspiring young girls around the globe and use #DayOfTheGirl to share on social media.
HISTORY
In 2011, the United Nations declared October 11 as International Day of the Girl Child. The first observance of the day took place in 2012. Since then, celebrations have taken place around the globe.
There are over 1,500 national days. Don’t miss a single one. Celebrate Every Day with National Day Calendar!

First Grade:

This week in LA we continued to work on our Caesar cipher wheel and decoding secret messages. We discussed the definitions decipher, which means to convert a text or
written code into normal language, and encipher, which means to convert a message or piece of text into a coded form; encrypt. They are learning to shift their wheels in different directions to find the secret message. We met at the doc cam as i went over the next lesson. We then all went over to our reading area to work together. A couple children caught on right away and were super excited to be able to decode so quickly. Some of the children grew frustrated with decoding. I sat next to them and helped them step by step. I explained that in a couple weeks they will be pros. We will continue to work on this next week.

Second Grade:

The children this week worked on their Hamburger Model Persuasive Writing. We watched a couple videos explaining how to write a persuasive paragraph step by step. Once the children had their introduction and three supporting details they moved on to writing the conclusion. We discussed that a conclusion  is, in some ways, like their introduction. I explained to them that they needed to restate the introduction and summarize the main points of evidence.

Third Grade:

We spent Monday working on our interaction and character traits from The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses. On Tuesday, we met at the doc cam and started listing all of the Girl's character traits. Some of those traits were caring, brave, kind, thoughtful, and scared. Then a couple students expressed that they were naughty and irresponsible. I told them they came up with some great traits, but now they needed to support their answers. They all agreed that the Girl was thoughtful for helping the horses find food. They all agreed again that she
was irresponsible for not coming home. They then needed to pick one of the character traits and using a hamburger paragraph organizer, start brainstorming ideas for a persuasive writing.

4th Grade:

We finished up our last few Interview On Change speeches. Again the girls all did
great! We moved on to Latin and Greek word elements. New words can be borrowed or created when words or word elements, such as roots (the core meaning of the word), prefixes (word part placed at the beginning of a word), and suffixes (word part placed at the end of the word), are combined in new ways.  I explained to them that many English words are combinations of Latin and Greek word parts.  Knowing these word parts can  help us determine the meaning of new words. They received a handout on the different word elements and completed the backside of the                                                       worksheet with a partner. We will continue with this lesson                                                       next week.

1st Grade:

On Wednesday, I set up balance scale centers. The children had clipboards with a chart in hand. They then had to walk around to the different color-coded centers and make predictions about the weight of different objects. They had to write down which is heaviest? Which is the middle weight? Lightest? About the same weight? Then then filled in their chart as they visited the 6 stations. The items varied from beads to popsicle sticks to spider rings to pompoms.  I had to go over the directions a couple times because most kiddos wanted to only weigh two of the items.

2nd Grade:

We continued working on our activity from last week where the children had to glue
8 triangles onto a 3x3 square. Last week a few were frustrated by this activity. It is somewhat tricky,  the children had to turn the triangles just right to fit all of them in the square. This week we felt much more comfortable. The children shared their patterns with the group. I love all the patterns the children came up with!!

3rd Grade:

This week in math we continued our lesson from last week. The children had to figure out how many fish could sit around 23 tables. We worked on a Think Deeply
where they had to write down the steps as if they were explaining the problem. We then took all we knew to fill out a Think Frame, breaking down the steps to solve the problem. I had one student at the doc cam jotting down the answers while I asked the  . We then moved on to the next lesson to figure out the pattern. I presented the children with different number patterns on the whiteboard,  they had to write the next number in the pattern. These kids are so
smart and were able to solve all the problems. I then had different kids start a pattern to see if the other children could solve it. We had a lot of fun and laughs.

4th Grade:

This week in math we continued working on our Think Deeply and Think Frames. I had a student at the doc cam to write down our thoughts. If you remember from last week the children had to answer the question "Explain to a friend who was absent today what a parallelogram is". Also, "Is a square a parallelogram"?  I asked the children "what do you know about a parallelogram"? I got a couple different answers such as polygon, 4 sides and angles. Then one student chimed in "quadrilateral". Yes!! The students again all agreed that a square is a parallelogram because it has 4 right angles, 4 sides that are equal in length and two pairs of parallel sides. Great, I think they got it!! On Thursday the kids paired up to complete a shape worksheet. We will continue with that next week.
