NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CUPCAKE DAY
National Chocolate Cupcake Day is observed annually on October 18. With a dollop of frosting, one sweet serving will satisfy chocolate and dessert lovers!
Cupcakes have also been known to be called:
- Fairy Cakes
- Patty Cakes
- Cup Cakes (different from Cupcakes (one-word))
Cupcakes can be traced back to 1796 when there was a recipe notation of “a cake to be baked in small cups” written in American Cookery, by Amelia Simmons. The earliest known documentation of the term cupcake was in 1828 in Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats in Eliza Leslie’s Receipts cookbook.
Cupcakes were originally baked in heavy pottery cups. Today, some bakers still use individual ramekins, small coffee mugs, large teacups, or other small ovenproof pottery-type dishes for baking their cupcakes.

On Monday the children continued working on their Cipher wheel. I briefly went over how to shift right and left depending on the directions were. We also touched base on what encipher and decipher meant. I then assigned them a Halloween worksheet and partnered them up to complete together. Some still required additional assistance. I decided to have them sit in our reading center and helped them more closely. On Tuesday I presented them with a Telephone Keypad Cipher. We discussed some different way to figure the keypad out. We will continue with this lesson next week.
This week the children finished up their Hamburger Persuasive Paragraph. I then introduced them to Pages, which is an app on their iPad. The students can now turn their Hamburger Persuasive Paragraphs into a technology presentation using Pages! I explained to them how to use the app and they got started right away. They were very excited to begin! We will continue working on this next week.

This week the girls continued working on their Greek and Latin Word elements packet. Once they finished I handed them a puzzle piece worksheet. They needed to come up with their own word using either Latin or Greek prefixes, roots or suffixes. They then shared with the class their new words and the new definition. Overall, they were very creative. I had to have a couple girls redo their word because It was a real word in the dictionary. They really enjoyed this activity and had a lot of laughs.
The children continued working on their hanger balance scale centers this week. We had a couple students who were absent last week so we needed to spend some time getting caught up. I suggested to the other students who were finished to check over their charts. This was helpful because a few needed to change their answers around. I think the children really enjoyed this activity.
This week in math, I partnered the children up to work on combining triangles to make additional polygons on the Triangle Combinations worksheets. Each student received a baggie of triangles. The partners then had to choose two congruent triangles (the triangles should have the same letter) and used them to make specific polygons. I let them know that they may have to flip or turn the triangles. I was very impressed with how well they did on this activity compared to the last one. They were all very confident and determined to figure it out. They were also showing me all the other shapes they could make. That is a win in my book!

This week the children continued working on their shape packets. We had a few who were absent so they needed to get caught up. I went through each one and sent them back to be corrected as needed. When they finished up I handed them a Quadrilateral Query worksheet to complete. They were able to pair up for this activity too. By the end of class on Thursday everyone finished up with the shape packets. I had a couple kids who were able to work on an Extreme Dot to Dot. They really enjoy that activity if there is a few moments of down time.

I introduced the children to the idea that the calculator has magic abilities. I explained to
them that you can put in the first number, press the addition, subtraction, multiplication or division key and press the second number. After that you only have to press the equal key. Each time you press the equal sign (=) a new number appears on the calculator. I demonstrated to the children how this works on the doc camera. A few were familiar with this cool technique. We then took out our worksheet What's Next in their Student Mathematician's Journal. We are working on completing a pattern in a chart. We will go over this again next week. Fourth Grade:
