Upcoming Events

It has been a busy week in High Ability. The children have all been working very hard. They amaze me every day.  We spent some time this week making polyhedron ornaments.  Look for them to come home next week.

1st Grade:
The children took turns giving their presentations this week in the reading chair.  This was very exciting for them to present their hard work. This time though they just had to press play. I am very happy how well this turned out.  Please ask them to share with you their hard work.

We then moved on to a worksheet where they were given a word clue. They could only change one letter to fit the clue. Most did a fantastic job making the word connections.

2nd Grade:
With white boards in hand, I walked around the room with a stuffed raccoon. I asked the children to come up with as many adjectives as they could about the stuffed animal. A few asked what an adjective was again. After explaining to them, they got to work.

The children took turns giving their answers. A few were still confused about what an adjective was. We then watched a School House video on adjectives. I presented them with a sentence, they took turns adding adjectives to it. They then created their own sentence.

3rd Grade:
This week the children worked on a Vocabulary Map. The word they had to look up was naturalist. They could use either i-Pads or dictionaries. They needed to define the word, write a source sentence, find synonyms and antonyms, write a student sentence and find the part of speech.

They were then supposed to present our homework that was given to them last Tuesday. Only one student completed the assignment so it put us back a bit. Hopefully, they complete their paragraph and we can move on next week to Jane Goodall.

4th Grade:
We met up to finish our discussion on Ruby Bridges and complete our biography organizer. The girls were amazing in coming up with Ruby’s major contributions. They were very impressed how change played a huge part in this true story of a little girl. Not only did Ruby clear the road for integration she also formed the Ruby Bridges Foundation to combat racism. They were sad to hear that racism still exists today.

We then moved on to Rules To The Order Of Adjectives. The girls were surprised that there are 10 rules of how you should order adjectives in a sentence. We will continue with this lesson next week.

1st Grade:
We only met one time this week due to their field trip. We started the worksheet Compare Three Weights. The children had pictures of three different objects that they had to decide if they were heavier than or lighter than. I then took objects from their baggies that they brought in and weighed them. They had to do the same thing as the other problem. We then had to order them from Heaviest to lightest. Pretty sure these kiddos have mastered this! We will continue with this next week.

2nd Grade:
The children have continued to work on their tessellation patterns. They are taking math pattern blocks and putting them together to make a shape that they can flip, slide or turn. Once they are finished they are to check with me to make sure it is an actual tessellation and not a mosaic pattern.

Then they colored the pattern into their workbook. This has proved somewhat difficult for the children. We had to have a mini lesson on flip, slid and turn. All are very excited for the upcoming holiday so they may be losing a bit of their focus. We are taking this a bit slower for that reason. We will keep pushing ahead.

3rd Grade:
This week we worked on “Finding the Function in the Pattern” worksheet. We had some trouble with that on our test, so we are just reviewing to make sure we understand the pattern. The children also were working on our Zaccaro packet’s.

Next week we will finish up the lesson by doing a Think Frame and a Think Deeply. I didn’t want to move to anything new due to the holiday break.

4th Grade
We continued our lesson this week on polyhedrons. If you remember, a polyhedron is a 3D shape that is formed by polygons that enclose a region in space. A non-polyhedron does not have shapes that are flat such as a sphere, cylinder, cone, or hemisphere.

The children took a sheet of paper and divided it in half with the labels polyhedron and non-polyhedron.

They then went around the room to different centers and wrote the 3D shape under the correct term. To end the lesson this week some of that children that were finished with the centers were able to play a 3D matching game. That was a great way to end the week for us.

Hope everyone gets their shopping done.
