Love is all around

Fourth Grade Language Arts:

The kids are reading more of the chapters and we are getting into the story. We are being introduced to more characters and we are learning which character is paired up with another character to begin to solve the mystery and play the game that Mr. Westing has developed.

The children will have to read chapters at home--up to four chapters per week to keep up. They love this part--the reading! However, there are comprehension, chapter notes and vocabulary packets that go along with the unit. It is a lot of writing!
I am giving them time in class to discuss the chapters and fill out any paperwork. They are excited to continue reading, however, all of the booklets that go along with the unit and required writing is overwhelming. We will continue to push through and enjoy the book as much as possible.

Fourth Grade Math:

We completed a Think Deeply on Wednesday and a Chapter Check -up on Thursday.
The Think Deeply question asks students to explain using words, diagrams and equations how they determined the amount of space that the story and pictures about Daddy Long Legs took up on the front page of the Javits Gazette. We reflected on the number of parts the page was divided into, using the grid paper, and the equivalent fractions that represented the area for each of the other front page articles.

On Thursday, the children completed their first Chapter Check. These checks are assessments, mainly for ME. It helps me keep track of my teaching and whether or not I am explicitly and implicitly teaching the skills that are required of the curriculum. I will have those graded and handed back next week. Keep an eye open for those!

Second Grade Language Arts:

The novel contains several themes involving loss and recovery, kindness and compassion, and the journey to self-discovery. The main theme can be summarized by a quote from the book: "If you have no intention of loving or being loved, then the whole journey is pointless."- The old doll.

We are moving along in our story. On Monday, we talked about Point of View in relation to events that Edward was experiencing. When we discussed each character's point of view, it helped the children see more rounded full characters. Abilene isn't just sad that Edward was thrown into the ocean---losing him was like losing connections she has made and her past. Moving away across the ocean is hard for her and losing Edward was like losing a part of herself.

Tuesday: we didn't have school :(

Second Grade Math:

On Wednesday in Math, the children completed a Think Deeply. This is the first time they worked on their own to complete the work. They had to because the question asked them to reflect on how they would change about their seatbelt design and why. They then had to suggest to the Meerkats how much of each material to use if they only had 40 centimeters to use instead of the 50 they were able to use to build their seatbelt. This required mathematical thinking along with deciding which materials were the most efficient.

On Thursday, the children completed their first Chapter Check. These checks are assessments, mainly for ME. It helps me keep track of my teaching and whether or not I am explicitly and implicitly teaching the skills that are required of the curriculum. I will have those graded and handed back next week. Keep an eye open for those.

Third Grade Language Arts:

Theme: Interactions
sub theme: interactions with nature

Learning to annotate text is really important and that is the focus of this week and next week's Language Arts lessons. The children will read both fiction and non fiction to learn how to read for the following items:

Icons and what they mean:

 *= interesting facts
Lightbulb=when you make a prediction or inference about the text
Checkmark=when your prediction or inference is correct
?=when you have a question about a fact or something you read
??=when you are confused or you don't understand the sentence or passage
Wifi symbol=when you have a connection to a sentence or passage (text to self, text to text or text to world)
X=when your prediction or inference is incorrect
!=when you found something you feel is important

Monday:

We finished talking about Jane Goodall's interactions with nature and animals. We have little animal activists here at Brummitt and I love it. These girls were very interested in what poachers are and what ivory trade is all about. They even talked about how they don't like to "kill" animals on Minecraft to survive and they find other ways to survive. Amazing girls!

We then began annotating text. I emphasized the use of annotating and then they got to work.

Tuesday:

No School! I love Winter, but I think we could all use Spring.

Third Grade Math:

We completed a think deeply. We ordered our Yeti's pet pens from greatest to least based on Area. The children were able to make a chart and order the pairs quickly and efficiently. We then looked for patterns in the numbers of our ordered pairs. They were able to determine that as the measurement of the length gets smaller, the width measurement gets higher.

Next week on Wednesday, the children will complete their first Chapter Check. These checks are assessments, mainly for ME. It helps me keep track of my teaching and whether or not I am explicitly and implicitly teaching the skills that are required of the curriculum. I will have those graded and handed back next week. Keep an eye open for those.

Thursday:

It was party day so I didn't get to see the kids!

Kindness Corner:

Unfortunately, many of the HA kids have been sick this week--including me!! All of the children have been so kind and thoughtful this week and I needed that!

I loved all of the Valentine's I received! Thank you for thinking of me!
