Now for a peek at our week in High Ability!
First grade- Acronyms
We reread the book Emergency and noticed that the book contains Acronyms, which are abbreviations or "short cuts" of a phrase where you use only the beginning letter of the words to say what you mean. These words are EMT's, CPR, IV,S ASAP,ER, and TLC. We then reviewed our Wumbers book and looked that words that were used, such as cre8ted, 2tos,and orn8.
We decided that these words are similar to acronyms , because they have meanings, and are abbreviated words. We decided that these are mostly used during texting.
Second grade- The Indian in the Cupboard
As many of you have most likely heard by now, we are starting our new novel. We made predictions based on the cover this week, and started reading the first chapter. They are excited to see what happens next. They think the cupboard might be magical, but are not sure. Second grade CogAt screener testing is next week.
Second grade -Bubble shapes
We finished our fun lesson on bubble shapes by completing our Think and beyond questions this week. The students enjoyed getting to blow bubbles and make shapes with straws and pipe cleaners. We are moving on to a new lesson to make a floor design for a playground using 3D tangrams next week.
Third grade- Spark
We finished our lesson on the Spark problem solving method by writing a proposal this week. The students came up with the idea of helping the KDG students at special class time. The criteria for being chosen to help with the project was that the students must have good grades, and be a model student with no behavior problems. These students would get to help in either art, music or PE class. They would rotate through the classes and then it would be a new group of students to participate.
We are getting ready to start reading the novel BLACK BEAUTY by Anna Sewell next week. I think the students will enjoy learning about the interactions between her and horses.
Third grade- Puzzling Puzzles
We started learning about puzzling puzzles where some numbers are missing and they have to solve the puzzle by finding all of the correct numbers. We started by looking at arrays. We decided that arrays are always even in rows or columns. They can be in shapes, dots, or squares. We then tried some puzzles of our own on the white board. That was so easy, we moved on to some more challenging puzzles that required us to use only one or two numbers to figure our the entire puzzle. More fun puzzles next week!
Fourth grade- NO LA due to ISTEP testing
Fourth grade - Equivalent Fractions and Area
We moved on from our Tangrams this week to fold paper and shade in areas to make equivalent fractions. First we made parts where they were equal and congruent. Then we made parts that were equal in area, but not necessarily congruent. This was a bit tricky at first for the students to visualize. We continued practicing this in our math journals, and created 3 non-congruent areas for headlines in a newspaper.
Dr Seuss Trivia: How old would Dr. Seuss be if he were still alive today?
