Happy Friday!
We are all excited about the snowy weather, and the upcoming winter break! I have heard many students talking about their plans.
We have also had many absences due to illness this week. I hope you all are feeling better and will be back in HA soon! Next week is a busy week at Brummitt with special field trips for some classes. This means that some of our classes will only meet one time next week.
This month at Brummitt we are focusing on being kind to one another. No matter what you do for someone in need, the smallest act of kindness costs nothing to you but is priceless to the recipient.
First grade-Anagrams
Second grade- Edward Tulane/ Metaphor
We completed the metaphor activity , seeing how each excerpt applied to our novel. Then we read the last three chapters to our novel, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. The kids were so eager to see how the story ended. Let me just say that it had an unexpected, yet joyful ending. Next week will work on our timeline for Edward's journey; finally trying to figure out how long his journey actually was. If your child still has a book at home, please help them remember to return it to me before winter break.
Third grade- Jane Goodall
Several students in this already small group were absent on Monday, leaving our small group to only a pair of students. We reviewed the interactions from the activity last week, as we did not want to start a new activity until all were present. On Tuesday, we were back at full strength and were able to move along to our new lesson. We started learning how to do a "close read" on a non-fiction article. We used the National Geographic article on Jane Goodall. The students learned how to use annotations to help them read the paragraphs. They marked paragraphs for unknown words, inferences, and connections as well as things that they were confused or had further questions about.
Fourth grade: Bio projects
The girls were working hard on the dates for their timelines. I am happy to say that all finally got all the important dates written down with a good description. They will be working on pictures for their timelines next week,
Christmas trivia
Q: What Christmas-themed ballet premiered in Saint Petersburg, Russia in 1892?
Last weeks trivia winners;
Riley and Tyler! Congratulations!!
First grade: Zani Lingo and chapter 1 review
This week we played Zani Lingo to review terminology of geometric shapes, vertices and sides of geometric shapes. The kids love the games in this unit! We finished the week with our chapter 1 review. All the kids rocked it. So proud of my first grade superstars!
Second grade: Wall murals and chapter 1 review
Third grade- Patterning
We reviewed making patterns with numbers and using the equation to solve. The students enjoyed making their own patterns and trying to trick their friends. I keep reminding them when they solve the patterns they should explain how they completed the problem like they are telling a classmate how to solve it This helps them to stop and really think about the problem, instead of just finding the answer. We only met once this week due to the Nutcracker field trip on Thursday. We will only meet once next week due to holiday parties.
Fourth grade- Fraction Fun
We played two different games this week to review our fraction skills. We played a fraction spiral game that was a "I have who has" where they have to tell either the mixed number or improper fractions and then make it the opposite to find the answer. For example...I have 2 3/5..who has 13/5?
We also played a game called Mixed up kings. This game uses playing cards where the face cards had a value of 1-5 and then regular cards were their own value. The cards were dealt as mixed numbers and it was a race to see who could come up with the improper fraction the quickest.
One week left until winter break! I am looking forward to a week of fun with my classes!
I will leave you with a picture of our very first snowman of the year from our house last weekend! Of course, I was all out of carrot noses, but my kids improvised. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
