Turkeylicious Tuesday!

The big day is almost here! I love Thanksgiving and spending time with my family. I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful long weekend.

First a joke from one of our HA 4th graders
Why do turkeys hate fancy restaurants that serve turkey?
Because it costs him an arm and a leg!!! LOL...

This week we had a very short week with Language Arts classes only. Here is what we were learning....

First grade:
We continued learning about word ladders this week. The kids are enjoying the activity, but are a little puzzled as we get into the more difficult ladders. The fact that the word ladders were on turkeys on Tuesday made the day even better!

Second Grade:
We compared The Velveteen Rabbit to our novel this week. We compared setting, plot and theme for these stories. We discussed the stories that we have been reading this week.. We talked about the main characters in each book as well as similarities and differences in setting, and plot. We then broke into two teams...team Edward and team Velveteen. Working with our teammates we came up with as many things as we could about our books. We then put the sticky notes on the whiteboard in our Venn Diagram and Mrs. Pierce added to them. We talked about how the setting changes many times in our novel, but stayed mostly the same in the Velveteen Rabbit. We made connections between the stories that both were about a toy rabbit and a child. We also made the connection that both rabbits were lost at some point. The students all did a great job thinking and adding ideas to our diagram. Next week we will reflect on the connections in our journals and answer some questions.  The kids also predicted as we go into chapter 18, that perhaps Edward may not find his way home, but will find a home with either someone we have already met in the story, or maybe he will find a forever home with someone new.

Third Grade:
We had a class discussion on  the similarities in plot, character, and theme; as well as we looked at how the character traits affected the plot of the stories of Beatrix Potter. We reviewed plot, setting, and theme by using a Brain Pop Jr. quiz. The kids loved the quiz, and we had a great discussion! We then filled out the Venn Diagram with what we thought were the same and different in the stories.  Then we turned to our journals to write about an imaginary interaction with nature. They did a great job using their
 imagination.

Fourth grade continues to work on their summaries through next week, and some are gearing towards finding images for their timelines. They are doing a great job!
