Fantabulous Friday!!

This week just flew by and was filled with fun and adventure. The weather seems to be more like March than January. I heard it will be 55 degrees tomorrow. Make sure to go out and enjoy the day before the snow returns. With no school Monday the Language Arts students only got to meet once this week, but we did get a lot done in one day.

January 15th is a very special day for America: we celebrated Martin Luther King Junior. He was a great man and great leader. He helped fight for the rights of all people and believed in peace. His 1963 speech “I Have a Dream” changed America and history as we know it. He received a Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He was a huge influence helping with voting rights. Here are just two websites that show how wonderful a man he was: biography and kids.nationalgeographic.

On January 30th I will start the CogAT testing for all the Kindergarten classes. I am hoping I will not miss any of my regular classes, but it might change the regular schedule a few times. The testing will take most of February. I hope that technology will be on my side this year and everything will go smoothly. Then in March I will be CogAT testing second grade too.

This week we continued learning about our Life Skills with trustworthy. I think this one is very important to instill in our students here at Brummitt. I want them to understand how important it is to be trustworthy and how it helps to make others want to be around you and give you responsibility in the classroom and in life.  Mr. Cammarata did an excellent job this week talking about being trustworthy on the morning announcements. He give the students the tools they need to succeed. I want students to know if you show you are trustworthy others will give you the chances your deserve to prove how great you can be.

Idiom of the Week

An Idiom is an expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual meanings of its constituent elements. This week’s was ….He has butterflies in his stomach. The students all had an experience like this one. They could all remember a time when they felt like they had butterflies.  I had no takers on drawing anything or designing anything, but I am hopeful for next week. Here is a hint to help you out: it involves bananas. I posted the picture for the next one on Thursday so students can stop by and see it. I also have the picture posted on the side panel of the blog to view.

Language Arts

First Grade:

This week we continued with Wumbers and added acronyms. The students were all very excited to decipher what they meant. We went over the basics. I put the letters up and they figured out what they meant. They got almost all of them except CPR. They knew what it meant, but not what each letter stood for. Here is the list that they rocked out: ASAP, EMT, IV, ER, and TLC. We also discussed when you might see an acronym or a wumber. They shared all kinds of great thoughts and ideas of when you might use them. Last we completed an activity where we deciphered a conversation between two people texting to see what they were really trying to say. They loved this because they all knew what was being said. They did a great job. Next week the students will complete their next writing assignment where they will write a persuasive paragraph. They all seem pretty excited to write about this subject.

Second Grade:

On Tuesday the students were ready to have some fun and test their knowledge of the book we finished, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. We played Jeopardy. A few years ago the High Ability team created a Jeopardy game to use for the book and the students love it.
The students this year loved the chance to use their knowledge of the book to play a trivia game. Each week we will have winners who knew the most and the final week we will have an overall winner. This week’s winners were Ava and Alina. They both got prizes out of the prize box. Next week we will see who remembers the most details on the next chapters in Jeopardy.

Third Grade:

On Tuesday we picked up where we left off on Fairy Tales and the students got to share their fairy tale. We heard all about Show White and Rose Red & Hansel and Gretel. This activity helps the students become comfortable with storytelling and with talking in front of a group. They are all doing a great job talking and sharing. I want them to understand how important it is to be able to describe and talk about what we read to share with others how we view a story and what we think is most important in it. Next week we will finish our storytelling and we will work on some grammar in one of our fairy tales.

Fourth Grade:

This week was great. The students that were set to show their Prezi presentations were ready to go. We all enjoyed learning about their person and what they wanted to share with us. Please make sure you look at the presentations. I filmed them and have them posted on the page labeled 2016-2017 Bio Presentations on the right hand side of the blog. You can click the page to see the students that have completed theirs so far. Please let the students look them over so they know what they can add or change for the Monologues too. Next week the remaining students will complete the Prezi presentations and we will start the monologues. I really look forward to seeing all the presentations and how creative the students have gotten with their monologues.  Please make sure to help your child if they have any last minute things to complete before next week. I want to thank all the parents and family that has helped their student to be so successful in this project.

Step Six: Consider change in the person’s life and how he/she made a difference. Write a monologue that includes events, changes, and differences made in regard to his/her life: We still have some students that need to show me their monologues before they have to perform them in class.
Step Seven: Create a Prezi that includes the person’s name, a photo, years lived, and major contribution(s): I still have one student that needs to finish this part.

Step Eight: Memorize your monologue. You may dress as your character. You are now ready for the People Who Made a Difference presentation: Due Jan. 23rd
  • Monologue Criteria
Monologue describes beliefs and values in the person’s life with detail and clarity.
Monologue includes insight to changes in the person’s life.
Monologue explores how the person made a difference.
Speaker confidently presents monologue using good eye contact, posture, and voice.
Speaker engages audience with appropriate words, facial expressions, and gestures.
The presentation is supported with appropriate costume and props

Math

First Grade:

This week we continued our lesson on area. I wanted the students to start to work more on predictions and their writing skills for math. They got to look at different targets and try to predict the area of them in one square inch tiles. They loved this because they got to first make their prediction and then figure out if they were right.
After the first one they got much better at their predictions because they could see in their minds how many it would take. That is what they told me and I agreed. They all did a great job looking and predicting and then finding the actual area. Then they took their data and wrote about it.
They did a great job using their keyword to explain their findings. Once we completed that activity on Thursday we started our next activity which was to compare target’s areas and decide which one they would choose.
After they completed all the data they got to write about how they came to their conclusions. I am really proud of them for using words they have learned like area, targets, smaller, larger, measuring and comparing. They took their time to write out their findings to share. They all got a prize out of the prize box for working so hard this week. Next week we will continue to work on predicting, comparing, and writing out our findings.

Second Grade:

This week the students got to see their videos from the egg seat belt crash tests. Please make sure to take a look at them. They are located on the right hand side of the bloog listed under pages. It is called Egg Crash Test 2016-2017. Then they answered Think Deeply questions about what they would change and give advice to the detective duo on what they could use. On Thursday once they finished with their writing they got the chance to play a round of math games on the I-pads. They were all very excited to get to take a little time to have some fun. Next week we will review for the chapter check-up and on Thursday the students will take it. I will make the review fun so it is easier for them to remember all they have learned so far.

Third and Fourth Grade: Math Vocabulary Comic Relief

So far this year the students are really enjoying figuring out the question on the Math Vocabulary Comic Relief board. Each week when the students come in on Wednesday they will go to look at the board and grab their problem. They will have five minutes to read and solve it. Once they have their answer they can turn over their paper and raise their hand and I will check it. This week was Divisor. Divisor -the number by which another number is divided. The number you divide by dividend ÷ divisor = quotient Example: in 12 ÷ 3 = 4, 3 is the divisor  This problem was a review for most students and they did an awesome job answering the question quickly. This week they all got it right the first time which was awesome. They all read the comic and question carefully and answered it. I am proud they all did it so quick and efficient. Great Job.

Third Grade:

This week we continued on our lesson called You Break Me Up!. We worked on one more problem on distributive property with 10x8 to help us better understand before we started our next challenge. Once we got that completed I read the scenario about Jane from the Yeti Institute of Discovery and the team’s organized list for all the options for the Yeti pet pen. I projected the one that Jane chose to show her class and we needed to find the dimensions of the array which was 8x20. Then we partitioned it into two rectangles of 8x10 and labeled them.  We came up with all the different equations for that and then figured out different ways we could partition 8x20. On Thursday, we looked over the list of Yeti Pens sheet and choose one we wanted to create the arrays for those dimensions. Next week we will complete Think Deeply questions about distributive property, area, arrays, and different equations.

Fourth Grade:

Well I am proud to announce they all did an excellent job on their chapter check-ups and they all earned the I-pads for the week. They were all very excited to find out how well they did.

They had so much fun getting to work on math games and challenge each other to play some of them. I also have a few students that let me know that they have the top scores for the school in some of the games and they got to pick from the prize box. Next week we will start our next chapter with a new lesson and some more new vocabulary. I can’t wait to introduce the new materials and discuss the spatial visualization.

Have a great weekend!
Mrs. Lutterman
