I hope everyone is enjoying
the ever-changing weather this week. It was a great, much needed, break and now
back to a short week. All the Six Flags
Six Hour Reading Program sheets are due February 19th. This week
there was a lot to get ready for in the next few weeks. Next week we will be
celebrating Dr. Seuss all week with lots of great things to do:
Monday 22nd - Green
Eggs & Ham Day: Wear as much green as you can.
Tuesday 23rd- Oh,
the Places You’ll Go! Day: Dress as what you want to be when you grow up!
Wednesday 24th - I Can
Read with My Eyes Shut! Day: Wear a shirt you have to read.
Thursday 25th – The
Sleep Book Day: Wear your comfy, cozy pajamas!
Friday 26th – The
Cat in the Hat Day: Wear read, black and white to honor Dr. Seuss and
Cat in the Hat.
I was busy this week testing
for the CogAT with Kindergarten. I am almost complete and we only had to change
one class this week. Next month I will test the second grade students.
This week we continued
learning about our Life Skills with Common Sense. I know that students need
to use this every day in lots of ways. I want the students to remember to use common
sense when making decisions inside and outside of the classroom. No matter how
smart we become we still need to use common sense. I know sometimes the
students can also forget it and need to be reminded.
Idiom of the Week
An Idiom is an expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual meanings of its constituent elements. This week’s was …. I am on top of the world. I think that we can all relate to this one and have felt this way before in our lives. The students really thought the picture was cute and campy.I asked them have they ever felt this way and most could think of a time when they did feel that way. No takers for a picture this week, but maybe next week. Here is the hint: It involves the clouds. Good luck and I hope someone decides to draw this one or find a cool illustration online.
Language Arts
First Grade:
This week the students all brought in their assignments on dime stores and they were so excited to share what they discovered. We first had to decipher our next secret message. This was a 3 x 13 array cipher. They discussed it and finally figured it all out. They loved writing in the cubes and solving the mystery of what it said: Pictures can stand for sounds in words. This lead us into our next discussion about Rebus puzzles and what they are: a riddle or puzzle made up of letters, pictures, or symbols whose names sound like the parts or syllables of a word or phrase. The students had a great time figuring our each picture and what the real words were. Finally we discussed everyone’s adventure in learning about dime stores. They all interviewed family members who were able to give them so much awesome information. All the students loved sharing what they learned. I think they all loved the candy and couldn’t believe how cheap it was. Next week we will continue Rebus puzzles with a story about a dime store and make connections between the dime store back then to store today.
Second Grade:
This week we continued with our novel The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. We only met one day but we fit in as much as we could and we finally finished the book. The students were so excited to see how it ended. They were so glad Edward made it back home to Abilene. They took the last part of the class to write in their journals about what they loved most about the story of Edward. We also discussed how their predictions were so different before reading the book and compared them to what the story was really about and how their predictions changed. Next week we will continue to make connections with Edward and all the characters. We will try to make connections through a Socratic seminar.
Third Grade:
Tuesday we finished up the grammar we were working on last week. The groups took their verb and told us each tense and gave a use in a sentence for each. Then they broke up into partners to read The Tinder Box. They will work to complete a reading analyzer and find verbs in the story.Next week I will assign each group a certain part of the story to find all the verbs and their tense. Then we will have some fun comparing the story to a video of the story to see how it changed and stayed true to the Fairy Tale.
Fourth Grade:
They will finish up their thoughts on it next week. We have one more monologue about Albert Einstein and all the students will show us their Prezis. All of them are due next Monday. We will have students present them on Monday and Tuesday Next week.
People Who Made a Difference Instructions
Step Seven: Create a Prezi that includes the person’s name, a photo, years lived, and contributions. (The students should have their log in information to work on at home.) Change due date because they needed more time February 22nd
Math
First Grade:
This week some students got to meet both days and some only got to meet once. We started learning about time and clocks this week with a fun project. The students got to make their own clock that we will use all through the unit to tell time and figure out what time it is.Some students got to practice time using the I-Pads on Thursday while others got to use the white board. Next week we will continue to learn about telling time with some fun activities.
Second Grade:
This week we continued working on patterns and sequences. We completed the Magic Hexagon. The magic hexagon was first discovered by Ernst von Haselberg in 1887. All of the horizontal rows and diagonals within the shape add up to the same number. Here is some information on it: http://mathworld.wolfram.
We also started magic square and Latin square. Next week we will finish up those and start on learning about a new puzzle.
Third and Fourth Grade: Math Vocabulary Comic Relief
This year I am starting something new we will be doing
each week on Wednesdays. I have the Math Vocabulary Comic Relief board. Each
week when the students come in on Wednesday they will go to look at the board
and grab their problem. They will have five minutes to read and solve it. This
week was Area. Area is a measure of how much space there
is on a flat surface. ... For example, in a rectangle we find
the area by multiplying the length times the width. ... For
example, land area is measured in units like acres and hectares. The fourth grade rocked through this and completed it very
quickly. Third grade also did a great job. A few students forgot where to put
the square part but they figured it out.
Third Grade:
Next week we will start the next chapter on percentages. I look forward to showing them how to figure out the percent when working on story problems.
Fourth Grade:
This week we started a new chapter called, How Much Change Will I Get? The students had to use their heads to make change without writing out the whole problem. They did a great job making change for each problem. I even had one student finish it all, including the genius level, and move on to Balance It, the next chapter. All the other students will be finishing up the genius level first thing next week so we can all move on to the next chapter.
Have a Great Weekend!
