Red Ribbon Week

This week was Red Ribbon Week. By wearing red on Monday the students showed their pledge to be drug free. On Tuesday I saw lots of orange in the school; it looked like a huge pumpkin. On Wednesday lots of students dressed up for their future career showing that their futures are bright and drug free. It was a great, short week.
This was the schedule for the week:
Monday, October 20: I Pledge to be Drug Free – Wear RED!
Tuesday, Oct. 21: Orange You Glad You’re Drug Free? – Wear ORANGE!
Wednesday, Oct. 22: My Future is Bright! I’m Drug Free! – Dress up like your future career!

Here are a few of our students all dressed up for their futures:

All month here at Brummit students are working on self-confidence and it shows. They are all eager to answer questions in class and show they have the confidence to speak in front of the room.

Language Arts:

First Grade:

This week we learned to use the Caesar Cipher to decipher and encipher messages. The students really enjoyed figuring out what the codes were really saying. We also worked more on connections and how to connect things. Students got to choose one of the words they deciphered and write a sentence about the connection they found. Then they drew a picture and labeled the connections.

At the end of the class on Tuesday the kids got to put a fall list of items in alphabetical order. This was fun and gave the students a chance to practice their skills. Next week we will decipher a special Halloween message, practice more on ABC order and write a fun story about Frankenstein.

Second Grade:

This week we began studying the poem “The Carpenter and the Walrus” by Lewis Carroll. To introduce the poem we watched the part that was featured in Alice in Wonderland on YouTube. The link is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00WCEbKM_SE

This gave us a chance to understand the poem better. The first time we read over it some of the meaning was being lost in translation. Then we completed the reading analyzer to find the key words, images and ideas of the poem. I think the poem gave them mixed feelings. On day two we decided to continue with poems. We reviewed the poem “The Witch” by Jack Prelutsky. This had many new and interesting words to talk about and also gave them a strong feeling about the poem. I found a reading of the poem that we listened to because I couldn’t read it quite as well as this woman could. Here is the link: http://vimeo.com/31401695 We completed the reading analyzer and talked about this poem and how it made us feel. Next week we will continue to work on poems by comparing two poems about Halloween including another one that is by Jack Prelutsky.

Third Grade:

We worked more on Myths this week and started to work on nouns. We all read the Myth “How Fire Was Brought To The Indians” We took this poem and found all the nouns in it. I had students highlight all the nouns and we went through which were common and proper. I had them get up and write on the board the nouns from their sentence and where they fit between common and proper. We also watched the school house rock video about nouns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qk4N5kkifGQ

This gave them a small break from the poem and a chance to think about all the nouns they might have missed the first day. We also started a funny mad lib by writing down nouns, verbs and adjectives to fill into a funny Halloween story which we will finish next week. We will also review what a legend is and have fun reading a book called “I’m Not Afraid of This Haunted House” by Laura Friedman. The students will have to find the nouns in each sentence I place around the room, and figure out if they are a person, place, thing or idea. We will also complete a Halloween Writing Prompt.

Fourth Grade:

This week we continued learning more Greek and Latin word roots. We started a fun exercise with a partner where they completed a Root Word Graphic Organizer.

The second day they students were all out on their trip to Guse’s Farm where they got to pick pumpkins, learn about the life cycle of a pumpkin and find their way through a huge corn maze while figuring out the clues.
Next week we will finish up the partner work and start some fun Halloween Writing Prompts. The student will also get to complete a spooky and funny mad lib by choosing nouns, verbs, and adjectives and then seeing how they fit in the story.

Math:

This week was short since we only had Wednesday due to the fall break, but we packed in as much as we could.

First Grade:

This week we completed a hundred chart mystery picture. See if you can figure out what it is. We also worked on adding and subtracting with 10.

We played a cool game with a worksheet called Going Batty for 10’s.
It gave us a chance to practice both addition and subtraction with 10’s. Next week we will continue working on addition and subtraction. We will play another game which helps us practice our skills and facts.

Second Grade:

We started off with completing a Subtraction Five Minute Frenzy to practice our math facts and skills. They had fun trying to complete it all and get it done as fast and accurately as possible. We worked on flash cards for a bit then finished off the day with a cool math game.
Catch the Ghosts lets the students solve math problems while moving through the board.
It was fun and exciting to see them practice their math skill and solve each problem. Next week we will practice more on the math facts and again play Catch the Ghosts since there are a few different boards for us to try.

Third Grade:

This week we have three more students that passed their 4’s and two of those also passed their 5's for the sweet multiplication.

We decided to work on math facts and we created flash cards and played a game about multiplication. Some of the students wanted to try to pass the time tests so I allowed them to take it once in the beginning of class and once at the end and it paid off because several students improved their scores.

Fourth Grade:

This week we worked more on origami cubes. The students that were having trouble figured out what they needed to change to finish their cubes.

I also had some students complete their next cube while helping others out. I let the students decide what they wanted to create for next week. It will be an exciting surprise so stayed tune to see what emerges from the high ability classroom. Here are a few cool shots of the kids working on things.

The students are also working on a guessing game to see who the six suspects are to see who knows their classmates best.

I look forward to next week and all the exciting things we have planned.

Have a Great Fall Break!

Mrs. Lutterman
